39 hours, no heat, no electricity doth not a happy camper make!

Standard

Yep, you read it. It started Monday evening, around 5 p.m. and lasted until Wednesday afternoon, around 1:30 p.m.  The gutters around the house, the trees, the driveways, the ground, even; all covered in a glittering sheen of ice. It was both amazing and terrifying at the same time. The snow that came along after the ice added another awe inspiring element, but didn’t help brighten my mood at all. The house hit 39 degrees, cat room hit 37 degrees; truly not my idea of fun.

I bundled me and the pooch up in blankets, built a tent for the kitties to cuddle up inside, and simply waited it out. Forgot to take the flashlight with me one night to go the bathroom (said room in the house being only twelve feet from the bedroom), and ended up stumbling around the bedroom for a few minutes before I could find my way back to my side of the bed and the flashlight! I never realized how much light actually came into the house via my neighbors’ outside lights and the one major streetlight we have on the road (We live in a very rural area).  Add to that no moonlight, and  for a few very scary minutes I thought I truly was in the bowels of Hell.

Needless to say, I got a lot of reading done by flashlight, just like I used to do when I was a kid; hiding under the blankets so my mom couldn’t see the glow of the flashlight lens!

These past two and a half days also gave me a new perspective and respect for the force known as Mother Nature. If this was just a ‘sample’ of her irritation, I’d really hate to see what she’s like when she’s really pissed off!

Thought for the day

Standard

Lately, I have had the privilege of helping a couple of fellow writers proof their works; in turn, I have been working with another writer in proofing a novel of my own. I have found that this has not only strengthened my perceptions when I sit down and write, but has also broadened my concepts in the developing of my characters and over all plot. I find myself being more cognizant as to how conversations are written, how descriptions can be more effective and how to pull certain aspects together to make it an overall tighter storyline.

I have also found a deep satisfaction in knowing that my suggestions – whether accepted or not – are helping a fellow writer become excited about their story, encouraged to continue on with their love of writing when there may have been some doubt creeping in.

I don’t do this for any reasons other than the fact that I can help others through my own learning process, it generates good Karma, and I feel I am ‘paying it forward’ (whatever it may be) in the hopes that others will do the same.

I hope this bit of insight encourages others to think about doing the same thing…there are writers who are in need of encouragement from those of us who have walked that path toward authorship already and sometimes, have no one but the author who Fate, Karma – whatever you wish to call it – has placed in their lives at the time they need the nudge to continue on.
